      Who are the Americans?

      The Native American people (1) went (go) to America from Asia 25,000 years ago through what is now Alaska.The Vikings from Scandinavia first (2) sailed (sail) to North America 1,000 years ago. The Spanish (3) discovered (discover) the continent 500 years later, in around 1500. The Spanish (4) called (call) the Native Americans “Red Indians” because they (5) thought (think) they were in India!

      Over the next 200 years, new immigrants (6) crossed (cross) the Atlantic from Britain, France, Holland, Germany, and Sweden. The Europeans (7) wanted (want) to live in North America, but millions of Africans arrived in the U.S. as slaves. Slavery (8) ended (end) after the American Civil War in 1864. Today 14% of the population is African-American-that’s 40 million people.

      After the Civil War, many people (9) traveled (travel) to the U.S. from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and Portugal. In the last hundred years, more new Americans (10) came (come) from Mexico and Central South America. In some places in the U.S. more people speak Spanish than English. On the West Coast there are many Chinese-, Japanese-, Korean-, Vietnamese-, and Thai-Americans. More than 30 million people in the U.S. speak English as a second language.
